About us

New Orleans Heat is a seven piece band playing the old style New Orleans jazz, recreating the music original music, be it a stomp, blues, hymn, spiritual or pop song of the day in the style of the late great, Bunk Johnson, George Lewis and Kid Thomas bands. Their motto is "helping to keep the real jazz alive".


They travel extensively over the UK & Europe playing jazz clubs, theatres, hotels, jazz festivals, church concerts and private engagements.
The regular seven piece line up consists of:-

 

  • Barry Grummett, pianist and leader. His driving piano style is a key component in the band's sound.
  • Richard Church – Trumpet/Cornet. Fine trumpeter whose greatest influences include Louis Armstrong,and Ruby Braff.
  • John Scantlebury - clarinet, alto sax. has met many New Orleans legends, memorably playing alongside George Lewis himself.
  • Dave Vickers – Trombone –Dave has been on the music scene for many years. Playing in the 1970's with the Chris Blunt New Orleans Band and after that the Ken Colyer Trust Band.
  • Alan Birkinhead – banjo, is a very good driving banjo player also a good vocalist.
  • Harry Slater - string bass, has backed many of the New Orleans jazz stars visiting the UK, including Alton Purnell, Kid Sheik, Louis Nelson and Thomas Jefferson, before becoming a permanent member of the band in 1973.
  • Drummer Colin Bushell has played with many of the West Country bands and at clubs and festivals around the country and abroad.


This fine traditional jazz band provides entertaining, foot-tapping music in the genuine New Orleans style.
