About us
There is never a shortage of fun, excitement and raw spirit whenever the highly popular Savannah Jazz Band takes to the stage. With their talent for satisfying listeners and dancers alike they have built up a truly international reputation at major festivals in the UK and overseas. The band's driving and exciting New Orleans style attracts large audiences wherever they play and are great favourites at Plymouth Jazz Club. The Manchester based band are making their annual New Year short tour of the South-West visiting only two venues, of which Plymouth is one. The personnel are:-
John Meehan, drums and leader.
Originally inspired by Gene Krupa in the film 'The Benny Goodman Story' John took up drumming playing in various local groups. He joined the band in 1979.
Brian 'Sam' Ellis, trombone, started playing about 1959 after hearing a George Lewis recording. He led his own band for about 10 years, and played with other well known bands before joining the Savannah in 1988.
Bill Smith, cornet & vocals,is the perfect lead for any band and he plays well as part of the team or on solos. His humour on the mike, and his way of involving the audience ensures everyone enjoys a good night's jazz. Bill is also adept on the trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone and harmonica and his vocals are always enthusiastically received.
Tony Pollitt, double bass, joined the Savannah following the death of the band's founder, Terry Mellor, and rejoined in 1990, after many interruptions due to business.
Chris Marney, banjo, is based in the South, formerly with Max Collie's Rhythm Aces and currently playing regularly with the Gambit Jazzmen and the Savannah Jazz Band when required.
Roger Myerscough, clarinet, is the newest recruit but has no lack of experience having served 11 years with the Mick Shore Band, 13 years with the Yorkshire Post Band, followed by 12 years with the Phil Mason All Stars.
