We’re fully into the swing of January, Christmas is a distant memory. Shake off those new year blues and rediscover your city this weekend whether it’s a new restaurant, a slice of the outdoors or trying something new. There’s definitely something you can get up to this weekend.

Support the rowers!

The RMA Gig Club is hosting its 2023 Winter League Regatta on Saturday 14 January at Mount Batten Watersports Centre. Spectate for free and watch over 120 rowers compete in different races from 10am. A fantastic way to get out in the fresh air and watch a spectacle in the Sound. Refreshments will be available and a cash raffle raising funds for the RMA Gig Club will be held.

Warm up with a Roast

There’s been enough time between Christmas and now to have a break from a roast. There are lots of restaurants and pubs offering the traditional Sunday lunch all over the city. Bistrot Pierre at Royal William Yard, The Fisherman’s Arms on the Barbican, or head out onto Dartmoor to the Two Bridges Hotel for a cosy roast in a traditionally English countryside location.

Take a dip in the sea

This might not be for everyone but we highly recommend it. Taking a dip in Plymouth Sound this weekend will certainly refresh you and get those endorphins pumping around the body. It’s free and a great way to spend time outside. Take a dip from Tinside, Firestone Bay, Mount Batten Beach or Devil’s Point.

Visit Heidi, the National Marine Aquarium’s latest addition

Heidi is a rescue turtle from the Oliver Ridley Project in the Maldives who lost use of his front fins during an entanglement with a ghost net. He has now found his forever home at the National Marine Aquarium and is getting used to his new friends in their Great Barrier Reef exhibit.

Hit the Christmas sales

The Christmas sales are still on at Drake's Circus, see what deals you can snap up. Whether you’re looking for homeware, a new set of trainers or even some discounted wrapping paper ready for Christmas next year there’s still time to pocket a few deals!

Plymouth is easily accessible by train with a wide range of services running from a variety of locations within England. Although some services may require a change or two.

Travelling from London takes around 3 hours with Great Western Railway, if you're coming from the north, the trip from Manchester can take 5 hours 15 minutes.

Alternatively, the recently renovated Night Riviera Sleeper service runs Monday – Friday and Sunday evenings. Visit gwr.com/sleeper for more details on times and how to book.

We recommend using GWR.com to search for the fastest and best route for your journey, and book in advance for the best price.
