Plymouth is beautiful in the winter, the city feels calmer and everything is moving at a slower pace. Being right by the sea does mean it can get very chilly, but never fear, we have six ways to keep yourself warm this winter.

1. Unwind at one of Plymouth’s top attractions

Cold, grey days are the perfect excuse to slow down and explore some of Plymouth’s major indoor attractions. The National Marine Aquarium offers an underwater world of rays, sharks and shoals of fish, making it a calming escape from the weather outside. The Box brings together galleries, collections and changing exhibitions, alongside a welcoming café where visitors can refuel with a hot drink and slice of cake. Over in Devonport, Market Hall adds something different with its impressive immersive dome and creative tech-led experiences, giving visitors another warm, weather-proof option for a few memorable hours indoors.

2. Settle in for a cosy night at the theatre

It’s still nice to get out and about even when it’s bitterly cold. Swap the sofa for a theatre seat and settle in for a fantastic performance. At the Theatre Royal Plymouth this winter, there are a variety of performances such as Matilda the MusicalIt’s A Wonderful Life2:22, and Miss Saigon.

3. Soak up sea views with a hot drink

In Plymouth, it is possible to stay close to the water without braving the cold for long. A short walk along the Hoe or through the Barbican, followed by a stop in a waterfront café or bar, means you can warm up while still enjoying harbour or sea views. Some of our favourites include The TerracePier One, and The Dock.

4. Explore Plymouth’s food scene

Winter is a good time to try somewhere new to eat. Across Plymouth, from the city centre to the Barbican and Royal William Yard, restaurants and pubs serve everything from relaxed comfort food to more special-occasion dishes, with plenty of cosy interiors to settle into. We highly recommend trying Bonne SantéThe Fisherman’s ArmsSalumi, and Nora’s for hearty food.

5. Be entertained at The Barcode

When the weather is unsettled, The Barcode makes planning simple. With a Cineworld, indoor activities like Paradise Island Adventure Golf and a choice of places to eat and drink all under one roof, it works well for families, couples and groups of friends. Catch a film, try bowling or arcade-style games and round things off with food or drinks, all without having to step far back into the rain or wind between plans.

6. Discover top brands at Drake Circus

Shield from the cold at Drake Circus, there are over 70 of the UK’s top high-street brands including Rituals, M&S, Lush, Mango and Next. If you get hungry, do not fear, there are plenty of opportunities for lunch such as Slim Chickens, Starbucks, and Wendy’s. You can bring your little ones too, there is now a Wild Things Play Project, which has its own cafe along with a play space specifically designed to recreate the feel of outdoors play.

Together, these six ideas show how simple it is to enjoy Plymouth in the colder months – from galleries and theatres to shopping, food and sea views. There are plenty of things to do and see; it is all about getting out there and exploring.
