About us

Pointless Beauty is cinematic fusion for the emotionally curious - music that moves between soulful ambience, kinetic groove, reflective stillness and hypnotic motion.

Led by Bristol bassist and composer Al Swainger, the project brings together composition, improvisation, electronics and acoustic ensemble interplay to create an immersive live sound-world.

For this Plymouth date at Cafe Momus, Al is joined by Kevin Figes on saxophones and flute, Martin Jenkins on keyboards, and Jon Clark on drums. The music balances structure, atmosphere and spontaneity without settling into a single genre - spacious, groove-led, exploratory and alive to the moment.

It draws on a wide field of influence, from Miles Davis and Weather Report to Bowie, Gabriel, Fripp and Prince, but the focus is not on imitation. It is music built around presence, interaction and the feeling of being pulled into a shared atmosphere.

"catchy melodies with great rhythmic hooks...blown away" - Jazz Views, Nick Lea

"Musically ambitious, adventurous and imaginative" - Theo Travis, Soft Machine
