Correspondent of Charles Darwin, leading authority on Crustacea and one of the country's foremost dentists, the life of Charles Spence Bate will be under the microscope at the Plymouth Athenaeum on Thursday, 5th March (2.30pm).The Athenaeum's Winter Lecture Series continues with 'Bitten by Barnacles: The Life of Charles Spence Bate'
Spence Bate was a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Linnean Society and President of the British Dental Association and the Odontological Society – the first from outside the capital.
He also served as President of both the Devonshire Association and the Plymouth Athenaeum.
The Lecture will be given by Athenaeum Chief Executive, Owen Ryles, who is a Fellow of the Linnean Society and the RSA.
He has previously lectured on Charles Darwin and his time in Plymouth, Sir William Snow Harris' pioneering work in lightning conductors systems and Charles Hamilton Smith, Writer, Illustrator, Solider, Spy.
Entry to the Winter Lecture Series is free and open to the public.
