About us
Linguistics professor Louise Banks leads an elite team of investigators when gigantic spaceships touch down in 12 locations around the world. Banks and her crew must find a way to communicate with the extra-terrestrial visitors. Hoping to unravel the mystery, she takes a chance that could threaten her life and quite possibly all of mankind.University of Plymouth psycholinguist Dr Caroline Floccia will introduce the film, discussing the relationship between language and thought, and focusing on the influential Whorfian hypothesis, which posits that our mental processes are shaped by the languages that we use (a core but tacit tenet of the film).
Dr Alastair Smith, Associate Professor in Psychology at the University of Plymouth, will introduce this event, which is part of the Celluloid Psychology series. Dr Smith will discuss human cognition being transformed through alien language.
