About us

The tale behind last year's blockbuster movie Wonder Woman, this powerful biopic details the creation of the DC comic superheroine. Psychologist William Marston (Evans) is convinced that women have superior powers of intelligence, insight and strength of character. Inspired by Olive (Heathcote) and Elizabeth (Hall), the women he is in a secret polyamorous relationship with, Marston creates Wonder Woman as 'propaganda for a new type of woman who should rule the world'.

Underlining the link to early feminism and the sado-masochistic backstory to one of the greatest heroines of all time, Robinson's film is a celebration of courage and creativity.

Dir. Angela Robinson, US, 2017, 108 mins. Cast. Luke Evans, Rebecca Hall, Bella Heathcote

The screening on Tuesday 13 March is presented by Birds Eye View (BEV), a charity dedicated to bringing ever greater audiences to films by women, with over 25k online followers and run by the producer of both Oscar winning multiple BAFTA nominated films Mia Bays. BEV are made up of some of the film industry's top influencers, seeking to bring their knowledge and networks to advance change. Joining Mia will be Anna Smith, film critic, head of the UK Film Critics Circle and acting film editor of Time Out.

Mia and Anna will lead an audience conversation about the film and its themes after the screening in their novel 'A&Q' format, and they will also announce the Birds Eye View influencer programme, which they are seeking to recruit Plymouth-based filmmakers, film lovers and gender equality agitators for – get tickets to see new films by women in our cinema in return for spreading the word and helping to effect change through consciousness raising and grassroots campaigning.

Programmed alongside these screenings and talks, Peninsula Arts is also hosting a series of activities to celebrate International Women's Day. From 5 March to 19 March , audiences can enjoy screenings of key feminist films: Suffragette, introduced by artist film-maker and Lecturer in Media Arts Dr Kayla Parker; Daughter Rite, introduced by Anna Navas, Film Programmer for Plymouth Arts Centre and Peninsula Arts; and Daughters of the Dust.
Supported by Film Hub South West, part of the BFI Film Audience Network, awarding funds from the National Lottery.
