About the Nao Victoria
This ship is a replica of the Nao Victoria, the first vessel to successfully sail around the world—an extraordinary achievement in maritime history. The original Nao Victoria, under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano, set sail from Seville in 1519 and returned in 1522, completing the first circumnavigation of the globe.
The replica was constructed in Spain in 1991 following an extensive period of historical research led by the ship’s designer and builder, Ignacio Fernández Vial. Drawing on original documents, 16th-century chronicles, nautical treaties, and period iconography, the research enabled a faithful reconstruction of the ship’s design. As a result, the replica accurately reflects the original vessel’s dimensions, rigging, sails, and equipment.
