About us
Matt Carter is the finest young jazz pianist in the South-west and has the distinction of gaining a Scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in 2017.
The Matt Carter Septet featuring Alexandra Ridout, BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2016, was formed about a year ago, It is made up of musicians studying on the jazz courses at The Royal Academy of Music, and at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. The band focuses on arrangements of classic swinging Great American Songbook tunes, arranged by Matt for the band. They also play some original compositions, some of which are more groove based, taking influences from genres such as gospel and funk.
Matt was brought up in Exeter, and performed mainly around the South West until September 2017, when he moved to London to start studying jazz at The Royal Academy of Music. It was there that he met most of the rest of the band, and formed the group within a year.
The band is made up of some of the finest young jazz musicians on the scene today, making a seven date tour in one week across the West Country from Ilminster to St. Ives.
The band members are:-
Matt Carter – Piano, Joe Lee – Bass, Luca Caruso – Drums, Alex Ridout - Trumpet
Harry Greene - Tenor Sax, Jonny Ford - Alto Sax, Harry Maund – Trombone.
Alexandra Ridout won the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year competition in 2016 and gave a featured performance at the televised 2018 competition final. She also won 'Rising Star' category in the 2018 British Jazz Awards. She is now a regular choice of top musicians for their bands including Clark Tracey, Clair Teal, Alex Hitchcock, NYJO etc.
Don't miss this great opportunity to see the jazz stars of the future!
