About us
Depending on your age, the music of O Fortuna from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana will either be instantly recognisable as that from the Old Spice aftershave advert, or the X Factor. Either way, why not come and listen to a bit more than the catchy first and last three minutes of the piece, as Plymouth Philharmonic Choir perform this on Saturday 29 November at 7.30pm at The Minster Church of St Andrew's in Plymouth.
The text for the work is far from what might be expected from 12th and 13th century poems. Written by Goliards, student clergy, they are irreverent, bawdy and satirical. Think more Freshers' week than ecclesiastical high church!
To add to the merriment, the choir will also be performing Bob Chilcott's Dances of Time. Bob wrote the suite of five pieces for his friend Brian Kay, whom he first met when they were choristers at King's College, Cambridge Through the work Bob wanted to convey the idea that despite the passing of time, music and singing can help us to live in and celebrate the present. The choir hope that you will join them to do just that.
The choir will be welcoming three first class soloists who regularly have engagements with premier orchestras, choirs and opera companies in prestigious venues in this country and abroad: Soprano Catherine Hamilton, Tenor Matthew Minter and Baritone Andrew Mayor.
