Remembrance Sunday Service at the Royal Navy War Memorial on Plymouth Hoe will be conducted by the Right Reverend James Grier, Bishop of Plymouth.
He will be joined at Plymouth’s Remembrance Sunday Service by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Kathy Watkin; the Lord Mayor’s Consort, Alderman Dr John Mahony and the Lord-Lieutenant of Devon, Mr David Fursdon.
The Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Chip Tofan; Council Leader Tudor Evans; Councillor Lee Finn (representing the Conservative group); Councillor Steve Ricketts (representing The Independents) and Council Chief Executive, Tracey Lee will also attend the service.
It will begin with a two-minute silence at the Royal Naval Memorial at 11am.
The Lord-Lieutenant of Devon will then lay a wreath, followed by the Lord Mayor (on behalf of the people of Plymouth), the Naval Base Commander and other representatives of the armed forces.
Representatives from the visiting Danish ship HDMS Esbern Snare and the Brazilian Navy will also lay wreaths, followed by the Military Kids Club Heroes (a support group of service family children from across the city) and pupils from local schools.
The Bishop of Plymouth will conduct the service, which will last for around 20 minutes.
Members of the public and local organisations will be invited to pay their respects and lay their personal wreaths at the end of the service, on the north side of the memorial, following the departure of the civic dignitaries.
The processional party will then take their places at the Civilian Memorial in Lockyer Street, where the Bishop of Plymouth will say a prayer followed by a poem read by Arezoo Farahzad, Chair of the Plymouth Centre for Faiths and Cultural Diversity. Wreaths will be laid there by the Lord Mayor; Captain Iain Ritchie, Captain of the Base (on behalf of the armed forces) and Rebecca Smith MP (on behalf of all the local Members of Parliament), followed by representatives from various services and organisations.
The Band of the Royal Marines, Standard Bearers and Joint Service Guards will start taking up their positions from 10:35am ready for the service to begin at 11am with the two minutes silence starting and ending with Gun fire. Wreath laying, prayers and speeches will follow.
This year, the Military Wives Choir will be performing as part of the service.
A further wreath laying service will take place at the Civilian Memorial on the corner Lockyer Street and Citadel Road.
Plymouth's Remembrance Sunday Service will be streamed on Plymouth City Council's YouTube channel.
Road Closures
Several road closure are in place from 9.30am until 12.30pm on the day these include:
- Windsor Place - for its entirety
- Lockyer Street – between Citadel Road to The Promenade
- Citadel Road – between Holyrod Close and Hoe Approach
- Hoe Road - Between Lambhay Hill and Maderia Road
- Armada Way Loop – between the junctions of Citadel Road
- The Esplanade - for its entirety
Parking
Parking restrictions will be in place from 8am until 12.30pm. Blue badge parking will be relocated to Elliot Terrace entrance on a first come, first served basis.
