About us

Dir. Hind Meddeb, Sudan, 2024, 78 mins. In Arabic with English subtitles.

In 2019, documentary filmmaker Hind Meddab flew to Sudan to film a sit-in protest at the Army headquarters in Khartoum. The people of Sudan were assembling, demanding reform after decades of military dictatorship. There she met a selection of young activists that she would continue to film over the course of 4 years, from the swell of hope and accomplishment following dictator Omar al-Bashir's fall to the oppression of the military crackdown and subsequent civil war, which today, leaves Sudan in ruins.
Standing in front of a powerful army, how could the civilian movement find the strength to persist? In conversations, in demonstrations, on walls, it emerges how the Sudanese tradition for poetry becomes a powerful tool for activism. Art, music and poetry bolster every stage of the Sudanese fight for freedom. 'Sudan, Remember Us' bears witness to a lost revolution and within it unearths a tribute to the power of creativity as a tool of survival and resistance.

The feature film will be preceded by a screening of UNTIL THE SEA (35 mins).
Until the Sea follows a group of young women refugees and asylum seekers who, after being settled by the Home Office in Britain's Ocean City, find themselves surrounded by water, many can't swim and may have sea trauma. Set up by passionate surfers Tigs & Rebecca, we hear how Reclaim the Sea uses a therapeutic approach to teach water confidence, swimming, surfing and paddle boarding. Working in sea rescue herself inspired Tigs to want to create the charity with Rebecca, whose advocacy work at Devon & Cornwall Refugee Service spurred her on. We also follow one young woman Olga as she anxiously awaits her papers to stay in the UK and another Ingrid from South America who is so keen on her new found love, paddle boarding, that she embarks on an instructor training course. But really it's just a short story about humanity and our love for nature and freedom, and how much we can help each other when we just show we care.
