About us
Ahead of our screening of Arrival, this talk discusses the concept of utopias by looking at the traditional trope of travelling to strange lands, where travellers make contact with advanced civilisations, and issues of otherness and difference. It stems from the research of Dr David Sergeant, Lecturer in English at the University of Plymouth, and is part of an AHRC-funded project, drawing on utopian studies, environmental humanities and cognitive narratology to explore how the novel has imagined better forms of community, with particular reference to globalisation and the issues it raises.
This event is part of the Being Human Festival.
