About us

A Historical Association & University of Plymouth History department talk.

Among the 1.5 millions GI's, who arrived in the UK during the second world war, were an estimated 100,000 African American troops serving in segregated units. At the time, the black population of the UK numbered only tens of thousands, concentrated in port cities such as Cardiff, Bristol, Liverpool and London, and most of the population had not encountered a non-white person before. This talk will examine the reception to African American troops throughout the UK, including the South West, looking at how the US authorities tried to impose segregation, the UK government tried to ignore it, and ordinary Britons defied it.

Dr Simon Topping, Associate Professor of United States History at the University of Plymouth, is the author of a number of articles on African American troops in Northern Ireland.
