About us

A Historical Association & University of Plymouth History department talk.

When war broke out in 1914, it also involved the distant German colonies in China and the Pacific isles. Although initial combat was brief, many German colonists found themselves in POW and internment camps in Japan and New Zealand for the remainder of the war.

In this talk, Dr Sandra Barkhof, Lecturer in Modern History at the University of Plymouth, will examine this little explored aspect of the Great War, and discuss the impact of war, occupation and internment on these colonists.
