About us
Original title: 海の沈黙 (Umi no chinmoku)
Dir. WAKAMATSU Setsuro, Japan, 2024, 112 mins. In Japanese with English subtitles. Cast. MOTOKI Masahiro, KOIZUMI Kyoko, ISHIZAKA Koji.
World-renowned artist TAMURA Shuzo (ISHIZAKA Koji) celebrates his career with a major exhibition. When one of his works is exposed as a forgery, it throws the strictly codified art world of high-society into chaos.
As the media frenzy grows, the body of a mysterious tattooed woman is discovered in Hokkaido. The investigation uncovers a link between the two incidents in the shape of TSUYAMA Ryuji (MOTOKI Masahiro), once hailed as a prodigy and Shuzo's rival, who vanished in disgrace years earlier.
Anna (KOIZUMI Kyoko), formerly Ryuji's lover and now Shuzo's wife, travels to Hokkaido and reunites with the man she thought she had lost forever. However, Ryuji seems to be deeply involved in murky artistic activities…
A collaboration between veteran film director WAKAMATSU Setsuro and acclaimed screenwriter KURAMOTO So, this film captivates with stunning cinematography while posing profound questions about who determines the value of beauty and what we ultimately seek at the end of our lives. MOTOKI Masahiro's portrayal of the solitary genius painter, who devotes his heart and soul to the pursuit of true beauty, is nothing short of extraordinary. An all-cast production.

The UK's largest festival of Japanese cinema, the Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme (JFTFP), is back again. This is the place where cinema comes alive!
Knowing others — let alone ourselves — is not easy, as we behave differently depending on the relationship, environment, or even intention. In an age of advanced digital technology, where imagery can be readily manipulated, it is even harder to define who we, or others, truly are. This notion of identifying the self has been repeatedly explored in cinematic narratives in various ways. However, is it really possible to know our true selves? And if so, would such revelations lead to happiness and freedom, or might they instead bring disastrous and harsh consequences? With these questions in mind, the Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme 2026 showcases some of the most unmissable Japanese films nationwide across the UK. From powerful social crime dramas and laugh-out-loud comedies to gender-defining films, fantasy, and horror, the programme offers something for everyone.
