About us
Plymouth University Choral Society will be singing in the Minster Church of St Andrew on Saturday 19 May at 7.30. This will be their third concert under their new Director of Music, Alice Dennis BEM, and it promises to be a veritable feast of French music. The choir will be singing Gabriel Fauré's graceful Pavane, composed in 1887 and with lyrics by Robert de Montesquiou, an aristocratic cousin of Fauré's patroness the Countesse Greffuhle.
In a new departure, the concert will also include a performance of the string quartet in F by Maurice Ravel, played by the Divertimento String Quartet. This work dates from 1903, and is Ravel's only string quartet.
The main work will be the ever-popular Requiem by Fauré, a setting of the Mass from 1893, full of rich soaring melodies and adventurous harmonies. The choir will be joined by two exciting young soloists, the baritone Miles Taylor from Yorkshire and soprano Kirsty McEvoy, resident soloist with the Sir Joshua Reynolds choir, based in Plympton.
