The Christopher Durston Memorial Lecture 2023

A Historical Association and University of Plymouth History Department talk

Join Dr Lloyd Bowen to explore the way in which speech and labels – 'Roundhead', 'Cavalier', 'Independent', 'Fanatick', 'Leveller' – helped create political communities and political identities in the 1640s and 1650s.

This talk looks at examples of speech and stereotyping but also concerns about the ways in which language itself was breaking down and becoming disconnected from its true purpose of communication into a vehicle for faction and division. It also explores the transmission of these terms into other languages such as Gaelic and Welsh, and across the early empire.
