About us
As part of our programme linked to 'Grenfell' by Steve McQueen, join artist Lisa Nash for a free linocut masterclass using memorial materials.
We'll begin with a round-table discussion and presentation by artist Lisa Nash, who'll share her memorial practice and the work she's curated over the past nine years in response to the Grenfell Tower fire. Drawing on examples of community-led memorials, collective rituals and collaborative artworks, she'll explore how creative responses to tragedy can develop over time and take on new forms.
You'll then create linocuts and print with specially commissioned paper and ink fabricated from floral tributes left at the base of Grenfell Tower. Working with these transformed memorial materials, you'll be invited to consider how an ephemeral act of remembrance can be preserved, reinterpreted and carried forward through creative practice.
Your work will contribute to a growing collection of responses, which will be carefully preserved and displayed in the lead-up to the tenth anniversary of the fire in June 2027. Following the anniversary, the collection will form part of an ongoing archival memorial.
This workshop is particularly suited to artists who are involved with socially engaged practice, but anyone is welcome to join. All materials and a light lunch will be provided.
About Lisa Nash
Lisa Nash is an artist, curator and archivist based in North Kensington, London. Drawing on her lived experience as a long-term resident, her socially engaged practice explores creative responses to trauma, loss and social justice, particularly within the context of the Grenfell Tower fire. She has worked alongside bereaved families, survivors and the wider community to develop participatory memorial projects, including the Grenfell Memorial Community Mosaic. She is a member of the Spontaneous Memorials Network and regularly contributes to conferences, publications and public programmes on co-created memorialisation.
The national tour of Grenfell is being coordinated by Tate in collaboration with the partner venues and is made possible thanks to support using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and from Art Fund. Each presentation will be free to visit and will be accompanied by a public engagement programme of talks, workshops and community events supported by the Grenfell Foundation.
