About us

Like other academics, Associate Professor in Education Studies Dr Joanna Haynes, and Dr Karen Wickett, Lecturer in Early Childhood Studies at the University of Plymouth, have experienced many years in education spaces ruled by performativity and accountability, which creates fast paced learning where more appears to be best. But during incidental meetings: in the lift, by the photocopier and at the coffee machine we have noticed our conversations have many of the qualities of slow scholarship.

Through impromptu dialogue, Karen and Joanna share ideas about bringing an ethos of slow scholarship to everyday academic life, not by adding more to the to-do list but by adopting a relational and curious disposition, through movement, noticing the power of the more than human, and leaning in to moments of passing conversation. In our dialogue, we will reference Parkins and Craig (2006, ix) who explain the Slow movement as 'a process whereby everyday life – in all its pace and complexity, frisson and routine – is approached with care and attention...an attempt to live in the present in a meaningful, sustainable, thoughtful and pleasurable way.'
