About us
Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) was one of the foremost portrait painters of his day and he used his position as President of the newly-established Royal Academy to lecture on the fine arts.Professor Sam Smiles explains how Reynolds' 'Discourses' aimed to show how the study of the old masters, imagination and intellect were all essential tools for the artist.
JMW Turner (1775-1851) was in the last intake of students at the Royal Academy that Reynolds admitted. Turner respected Reynolds but also challenged some of his ideas, particularly those regarding the relationship of rules to practice and the imaginative power of landscape painting.
