About us
To mark this year's LGBTQIA+ History Month (February 2024), see a new series of displays that showcase Plymouth’s LGBTQIA+ community archives in our Learning Room showcase (ground floor) and Active Archives gallery (first floor).
Our Learning Room showcase and one of our Active Archives showcases highlight a recent project called 'Two Sides of The Same Coin' - an artist-led initiative from the Queer District Collective that collects LGBTQIA+ stories and voices of Plymouth. The artists were inspired by a painting of the back room of the former 'Lockyer Street Tavern' by popular artist Beryl Cook (1926-2008) and built a bar which toured around the city collecting stories to add to a community archive.
Our remaining Active Archives showcases have been co-curated with members of the LGBTQIA+ community. We invited participants from organisations such as Pride in Plymouth, Culture Club and Queer Out Loud to help select material and contribute to its interpretation and install. The themes of the showcases include archives as activism, healthcare, self-publishing, safe spaces and In Other Words (Plymouth’s former radical bookshop).
All our Active Archives showcases are bright yellow - a colour drawn from the clothing in Beryl Cook’s painting and the Pride flag, where it represents hope, joy and sunshine.
