About us
The Mariner exhibition looks at what connects us across history and the present, from the desire to travel – to journey out and back again – to the role of intuition and imagination, the making of mistakes and the process of recovery and redemption through knowledge and understanding.Featuring three new artist commissions and artworks of international significance, Mariner opens up new perspectives on marine science, postcolonial history, migration, environmental issues, isolation, and different belief systems. In this way, Mariner is an epic tale retold for a 21st-century audience, with an urgent ecological message whereby we all become the Mariner.
Artists: Vija Celmins, Nadav Kander, Tacita Dean, Lucy & Jorge Orta, and new commissions by Serena Korda, Mary Evans and Grace Schwindt.
This exhibition is curated by Dr Sarah Chapman, Artistic Director of The Arts Institute in partnership with The Box, Plymouth; The Edge, University of Bath; and John Hansard Gallery, University of Southampton.
