About us

A Historical Association and University of Plymouth History department talk.

In this talk Dr Chris Smart, University of Exeter, will uncover the findings of The Bere Ferrers archaeological project, which investigates the development of the royal silver mines on the Devon bank of the Tamar between 1292 and the mid 16th Century.

This illustrated talk will introduce the audience to the rather chance discovery of a Roman auxiliary fort on the hill above Calstock, where it held a dominant position over the lower Tamar Valley. It will outline the key structural features of the fort, but also explore other aspects of the archaeological complex – including a marching camp, possible early mineral exploration, and a lost medieval village. The site, and its place in Roman South West Britain will be reviewed in light of new research as part of the University of Exeter's Understanding Landscapes project.

Chris is a landscape archaeologist who specialises in the heritage of Roman and medieval Britain. He currently manages the National Lottery Heritage Fund project 'Understanding Landscapes' which is engaging the public in research on Roman and medieval landscapes in Devon and Cornwall, UK. He will lead a follow-up visit to the site in Summer 2021.

As part of this talk you are also invited to participate in a live Q&A session with the speakers.
