The Armada Cup Sailing Race Returns After 30 Years: Crews from Plymouth and San Sebastián Set Sail for a Historic Celebration of Maritime Heritage.
Plymouth, UK / San Sebastián, Spain – July 2026
Excitement is building on both sides of the Bay of Biscay as the Armada Cup – Plymouth – San Sebastián – Vicente Munilla Memorial prepares to make its long-awaited return, 30 years after its last edition. The prestigious international offshore regatta will set sail from Plymouth on 18 July 2026, bringing together around 150 sailors for a spectacular 460-nautical-mile ocean crossing to San Sebastián.
The revival of the Armada Cup marks a significant milestone in the enduring friendship between Plymouth and San Sebastián, originally established through the cities' twinning agreement in 1984. First contested in 1986, the race has become a symbol of maritime cooperation, sporting excellence and cultural exchange between the two coastal cities.
This year's event is particularly special as it coincides with the 130th anniversary of the Real Club Náutico de San Sebastián, adding further significance to a race that remains the only offshore regatta along the entire Cantabrian coast. There will also be partcipants from both cities as well as Spain, UK and France.
An International Challenge at Sea
The race will begin in Plymouth on 18 July, with spectators able to follow the start live from Plymouth Hoe, Mount Batten and Jennycliff before the fleet embarks on its journey across the English Channel. Competitors will pass the island of Ouessant and the Chaussée de Sein before heading south towards the Basque coast.
Depending on weather conditions, the fleet is expected to arrive in San Sebastián between 20 and 23 July, where crews will be welcomed with an official maritime salute celebrating their achievement and the spirit of international sailing.
Race followers around the world will be able to track the fleet's progress in real time through the event's online tracking platform.
Strengthening Historic Links
The Armada Cup continues to showcase the strong relationship between Plymouth and San Sebastián, highlighting shared maritime heritage while creating new opportunities for cultural and sporting collaboration.
"The return of the Armada Cup after three decades is a remarkable achievement and a fitting celebration of the historic ties that connect our two cities," said the Chris Arscott, Commodore of the Royal Western Yacht Club. "This is much more than a sailing race—it is a celebration of friendship, international cooperation, inclusion and the enduring spirit of the sea."
