About us

Join us in Plympton, birthplace of Sir Joshua Reynolds, and explore the fascinating life of Mai the celebrated Polynesian visitor to 18th century England and his part in the remarkable long distance voyages of the time.
This event is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of art, science and society of the mid-Georgian period while enjoying a fun and informative evening at the historic Guildhall which itself has connections to the story.

Don't miss out on this chance to discover more about the background to Journeys with Mai exhibition at The Box, Mai's time in Plymouth and the many links with Sir Joshua Reynolds before the portrait journeys to Los Angeles, California.

Lucy Ward is a British journalist and writer. Lucy is currently researching and writing a new book about Mai, to be published in Spring 2027, and has recently travelled to Tahiti and its neighbouring islands to learn more about his story.
